There are many jobs that come with a certain amount of elevated risk, especially when there are large pieces of equipment and dangerous conditions involved. Therefore, it is the responsibility of employers to make sure that any unsafe working conditions are immediately dealt with. When an employee is injured on the job and the injury prevents them from working for some time, workers’ compensation is there to provide some relief, but it cannot undo the negligence of an employer.
A new report sponsored by a number of Massachusetts agencies criticizes the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for its inability to ensure the safety of every workplace in the state. The report, which shows the numbers of fatalities from workplace accidents for 2012 and lists the most dangerous occupations for workers, says that the government agency is lacking in staff and funds. This factor allows employers to take risks with their employees and expose them to dangerous conditions.
Part of the reason that some jobs are more hazardous for workers than others is the fact that employees are exposed to dangerous materials such as asbestos. The occupations which include first responders and construction workers can lead to the development of different cancers or some type of occupational disease for employees further down the road.
It is important to remember that injuries on the job don’t just include accidents in which someone is injured. Injuries can include repetitive stress, cancer, and other illnesses. When someone is dealing with a work-related injury or health issue, it may be a good idea for them to meet with an experienced attorney.
